Underground Dwelling in Oia
An underground dwelling in Oia, Santorini, offers a unique living experience rooted in the island’s architectural tradition
Carved into the volcanic cliffs of Oia, Santorini, this traditional underground dwelling is a stunning example of architecture harmonizing with nature. Designed to blend seamlessly with the rugged landscape, this house offers more than just aesthetic appeal—it provides practical benefits as well. By being carved into the rock, the dwelling maintains naturally cool interiors, making them highly energy-efficient, a feature that has been utilized for centuries in the Mediterranean’s warm climate.
Inside, the soft, curved walls and minimalistic design create a serene, calming environment, ideal for escaping the summer heat while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding natural beauty. Large, arched windows and terraces frame breathtaking, unobstructed views of the caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea, turning the exterior vistas into a living canvas of Santorini’s iconic landscapes.
This cave house encapsulates the island’s timeless charm, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern living. It reflects the peaceful, slow-paced rhythm of Oia, offering an authentic experience of Greek island life while providing all the comforts of contemporary luxury. Experiencing life in this dwelling allows for immersion in the island’s heritage whilst spectacular sunsets, endless sea views, and the magical allure of Santorini right outside your door.
The BAUWERK Limewash in the elegant shade of Mykonos was chosen for this project, providing a refined, natural finish that complements the aesthetic of the space. Limewash is not only known for its beautiful, matte texture and timeless appeal, but also for its breathable properties, making it an ideal choice for environments where moisture control is essential.
Addressing existing moisture issues was a crucial part of this project. To ensure a lasting and effective solution, we began by thoroughly removing the old layers of plastic and acrylic paint, which had prevented the walls from breathing properly. This step was essential to eliminate any trapped moisture and prevent future damage.
After the removal, we applied a Ready White Plaster (SOVAS-M20), a product of our own production, specifically formulated with Natural Hydraulic Lime. This plaster serves as an excellent base for breathable finishes, allowing the walls to naturally regulate moisture. Its composition not only ensures a solid and durable foundation but also enhances the overall breathability of the surfaces.
Once the plaster had set, the BAUWERK Limewash in Mykonos was directly applied. The result is a finish that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space with its soft, natural look but also promotes the healthy, breathable qualities of the walls. This process ensures that moisture is properly managed, preserving both the structural integrity and beauty of the surfaces for years to come. The combination of traditional materials and modern techniques allowed us to achieve both functionality and timeless elegance.
